Staying well with essential oils

Recently I have been using essential oils and thought that I would share a bit about the oils that I have been using and how they can help to keep you well.

This is an immune boosting blend containing wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary that is perfect for diffusing throughout the home or massaged into the skin when diluted with a suitable carrier oil. You can also add 1 drop to a glass of water to sooth a sore throat and to stabilise blood sugar levels. The oils in this blend have been chosen for their ability to kill harmful bacteria, mold and viruses hence why the OnGuard range has expanded beyond the oil blend to household cleaners, toothpaste and throat drops. While I haven’t used any other OnGuard products yet I have added the OnGuard oil itself to homemade toothpaste and to vinegar based surface cleaner in addition to diffusing and using it topical and internally.

Easy air (or Breathe in the US)
This blend smells amazing and can be used to replace perfumes and colognes that contain hormone disrupting chemicals plus the blend of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Peppermint and Lemon helps to stimulate mental activity and clear the airways. I wear this on my wrists to inhale at work and diffuse it at home I’m feeling a little congested.

Ever since I started using doTERRA oils, this has been my favourite. The ability it has to alleviate digestive discomfort has been amazing. I usually add a drop or 2 to 500 ml of water (because I like the taste) and drink it throughout the morning and if I don’t want it in water I put a couple of drops below my navel and rub into my skin. Alternatively it can be applied to reflex points on the feet. If you suffer with bloating, colitis, constipation, cramps, have Coeliac or Crohn’s disease then you may enjoy this blend.

Ice Blue
Honestly I think this is a must have for anyone who experiences muscle and joint discomfort and is perfect for athletes to help recover from a tough training session.

Smart and Sassy (or Slim and Sassy in the US)
This is the latest addition to my oils collection and I’m already hooked. I’m an absolute cinnamon fanatic, which I think is why I love this blend so much. It combines cinnamon, ginger, peppermint, lemon and grapefruit (how tasty) to help control hunger, regulate blood sugar levels, promote healthy digestion and uplift the mind.

Tea Tree (or Melaleuca)
I have used tea tree oil for ages in the past mainly for cleaning and to apply to pimples however ended up buying the doTERRA oil because it smelt less synthetic then brands I had used in the past and is sourced from right here in Australia. Historically tea tree had been used to heal cut and skin infections (such as athletes foot, eczema, dermatitis, rashes, sunburn) and when inhaled or diffused can ease the symptoms of coughs and colds.

I’ll admit I bought this oil primarily for the use of flavouring homemade raw chocolate (don’t judge :-P) however I have since discovered that there are many more uses for this oil so it no longer lives just in my kitchen. I now use it in water for digestive complaints, combined with lavender and applied to temples to ease headaches, in homemade toothpaste and body scrubs and in the diffuser to energise. It’s also a great oil to travel with as it helps with jet lag, motion sickness, nausea and gastro.

A perfect relaxation oil to help unwind after a long day. I love adding a few drops of this oil to my bath with some Epsom salts or I will mix a few drops with coconut oil and rub into my feet before going to bed (I’m sure it helps me sleep). I also have this combined with peppermint oil in a roller bottle for if a headache threatens. The other way that I have used this oil is after burning myself on the grill of my oven as it helps soothe skin irritation, relieve redness and reduce swelling.

This is a favourite with a lot of people because it smells so good. The oil is extracted from the rind of the lemon meaning (from my understanding) that it isn’t likely to lead to enamel damage on the teeth if you consume it (as could happen with excessive lemon juice). It also makes a great alternative to nasty chemical filled cleaners as it helps neutralize odors and get rid of sticky residues – add a couple of drops to your dishwasher for sparkly dishes or 6 drops to a spray bottle with water and vinegar as an all purpose cleaner.

Wild Orange
This uplifting oil is said to improve emotional imbalances, depression, anxiety, insomnia and for women going through menopause. So far I’ve only used this oil occasionally to flavour water and to make a raw choc orange slice but I imagine a couple of drops of orange oil in a cake, soup or dip would also work well.

I was going to leave this off my list because up until a couple of weeks ago I hadn’t tried it. I’ve heard that one drop of oregano oil can transform a dull Bolognese into an amazing Bolognese but the smell is so overpowering that I had been put off using it. However I had read that it was great for warding nasty foodbourne bacteria so when I was struck down with either a stomach bug or food poisoning I tried a drop of oregano in a glass of water and I’m sure that helped clear out any nasties. I’ll admit I don’t think I’ll be doing that often because it didn’t taste nice (in my opinion) so thankfully there are other methods of using such as diffusing it and adding to a spray bottle for cleaning. It is also said to have high antifungal and antiparasitic properties so if you are prone to athletes food, Candida, warts and fungal infections then you might want to try diluting this oil with a carrier oil and applying to the affected area or reflex points.

And finally frankincense
I’ve left this one til last because it is known as the king of all oils. Most people would be familiar with frankincense from the story of the three wise men. If you want one oil for everything, then you want frankincense oil. Not only is it a calming oil that can help relieve anxiety but it can also help you focus and is uplifting. Its the perfect addition to your beauty routine as its nourishes and rejuvenates the skin, strengthens weak nails and promotes healthy cells.

If you are interested in purchasing any of these oils either singularly or in a kit just let me know. I recommend starting with an enrollment kit so that you get to try a wide variety of oils (in fact most of the ones listed) but it also means that you will be able to purchase your oils at wholesale price like I do and you will have exclusive access to an essential detox program. I recommend the Home Essentials Kit which is what I started with as it includes the larger 15ml bottles and a diffuser but feel free to go for a bigger or smaller (The essentials Collection) kit.

*Please note that some people suggest that you shouldn’t ever consume essential oils and while I have shared with you some oils that I do consume I’m not advising that you do as there are plenty of other ways to get the benefits. If you do, please ensure that the oils are from a reputable source and safe for dietary use.
