I am just digging vegetable juices and icy smoothies at the moment. Despite it being Autumn in Australia, the warm weather is sticking around a little longer (happy dance) making it a perfect time for smoooo-thies. Normally my preference is to add something green to my smoothie for the added health benefits (and because green things look healthier right…well generally) but this morning I skipped the greens and went for a honeycomb inspired smoothie instead. Don’t be fooled though, this smoothie doesn’t actually contain any honeycomb, or honey for that matter, rather the honeycomb flavour comes from the maca powder. For those who don’t know, Maca has been traditionally used for endurance, energy, fertility and healthy hormone function making it a great super food addition to kick start your morning.
3/4 frozen banana roughly chopped
1/4 banana, reserved for garnishing
1 cup almond milk (or preferred milk of choice)
2 tsp maca powder
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp chia seeds
Cacao nibs for garnishing
Add the frozen banana, almond milk, maca powder, cinnamon and chia seeds to your blender with a handful of ice cubes and blend until nice and slushy and no chunks of banana remain. If you want it runnier, add more milk or water. Taste and add extra maca powder or cinnamon if desired. Pour into glasses and serve topped with slices of banana and sprinkled with cacao nibs.
