A lemon (water) a day, keeps the Doctor away

Let me start by saying that my husband isn’t totally on board with this whole ‘real food movement’ (don’t get me wrong, he gets it, but loves his bread, pasta & chocolate way too much) but one thing that he is on board with is lemon water. He swears that lemon water is the reason he went the whole of the year 2013 without a cold and if either of us are feeling run down, the saying in our household is “better get on the lemon water”. You’ve probably heard of many people starting their day with a glass of warm water and lemon juice, and Michael and I are no exception. Here are some reasons why you to should “get on the lemon water”.

Detoxing – having lemon juice in warm water first thing in the morning helps to flush out stored toxins

Boosts your immune system – helping to keep infections and colds away thanks to its vitamin C content

Cold reliever – Helps to lessen the severity of the common cold once its hit and speed up recovery

Alkalising – by balancing the pH levels in the body

Aids digestion – by encouraging the production of bile and digestive juices

Skin health – rejuvenates skin from the inside, giving you a healthy glow and helping prevent wrinkles and acne

Eye health – maintains eye health and helps prevent future eye problems

Hydrating – if you find plain water boring then this can make it easier to drink enough water

Workout recovery – helps to replenish body salts after an intense workout

Infection control – prevents the growth of pathogenic bacteria that contributes to infections and disease

Metabolism booster – helps to kick start your metabolism and gear your body up for weight loss

Prevents constipation and diarrhea – by making it easier to eliminate waste products from the body

Pain relief – dissolves uric acid helping to reduce joint pain and inflammation

Tastes great – soothing to drink warm in winter and refreshing to drink cold in summer

We usually drink our lemon water warm by pouring boiled water into a mug with about an inch of cold water and squeezing a quarter to half a fresh lemon in. I don’t recommended drinking concentrated lemon juice as it can ruin the enamel on the teeth when in direct contact. Often we’ll drink a couple of mugs of diluted lemon water each morning or my husband will take a 1L flask of warm water to work with a few slices of fresh lemon.
